Huslejenævn: short guide for tenants

What the rent control board is, who can file, what it can decide, and where to see the current fee.

General information, not legal advice

What it is

The huslejenævn (rent control board) is a public body. It is neutral and decides disputes between a tenant and a landlord. It is not a tenants' association like LLO.

Who can file

A tenant or a landlord can file. You do not need a lawyer, and you do not need a membership. The process is written. There is a small fee.

See the current amount at kk.dk

What it can decide

  • Rent amount
  • Rent increases
  • Maintenance, including mold the tenant did not cause
  • Move-out repairs
  • Repayment of the deposit
  • Water and heating accounts

Regulated rent that is clearly too high

If the rent is regulated (not freely set rent, fri husleje) and clearly too high, you can challenge it within 1 year after moving in.

Before you file

Write to the landlord first, and keep the documentation.
